The Pinocchio Paradox
Here is a brief summary of the famous folktale Pinocchio.
Pinocchio is made from a lonely wood maker. He is soon granted the gift of life from a fairy. He indulges in mischievous behavior which causes trouble for the wood maker. However, every time the wood maker questions Pinocchio, he always lies. Disheartened by his actions, the fairy punishes Pinocchio by increasing the size of his nose every time he tells a lie.
Here is where the paradox comes into play. The Pinocchio Paradox states whenever Pinocchio says “My nose will grow now”, it would cause a paradox.
This is because he is only punished through lying, and by stating his nose will grow creates a lie. However, because his nose has grown, his original statement is now true, creating the paradox.
